Hair loss, known clinically as – alopecia, can be a temporary or permanent condition affecting both men and women. Genetic aging and changes in hormone levels (sex hormones and growth hormone) are responsible for most of the hair loss that drives people to seek treatment.
Most men experience male- pattern balding, termed androgenic alopecia, beginning as early as the late 20’s. It is genetically determined and driven by the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotesterone (DHT). DHT causes hair follicles on the scalp to gradually atrophy and become dormant. Treatments should be initiated early as after a number of years the hair follicles are permanently inactivated. During the pre and postmenopausal years, about half of women experience female pattern baldness, which is a diffuse thinning of hair. It is a result of estrogen decline and in men is driven by DHT. Bioidenctical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can minimize this type of hair loss in women. The hair loss many women experience after a pregnancy is usually temporary, but LLLT can greatly speed re-growth. Both men and women experience some diffuse scalp and body hair loss, caused by a gradual decline of human growth hormone (HGH) with age, existing hair become much finer in texture. LLLT and age management therapy can migrate many of the changes.
There are many other causes of alopecia: medication from oral contraceptive to chemotherapy, autoimmune disease (ex. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and lupus), malnutrition, certain vitamin deficiencies, aggressive salon procedures including hair straightening and over traction from hair extensions, severe stress and physical trauma which can alter the growth/ rest (also called anagen/ telogen phases of the hair follicles. In many of these situations, medical and nutritional treatments resolve the underlying problem will complement the hair re-growth program.
The hair re-growth program utilizes the Low Level Laser which are called “soft” or ‘’cold” laser because they do not have the thermal component to damage tissue.
LLLT is an FDA approved therapy based on the scientific principal of photo-biogenesis which occur when the laser light is absorbed by the cells of the hair follicle, stimulating cell metabolism and increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. Thus dormant hair follicles (telogen or “resting” stage) are coaxed into the active growth (anogen) phase. Office based LLLT treatment combined with home LLLT offers the best results. With male and female pattern baldness, the earlier treatment is started the greater the success rate. LLLT combined with topical treatments, and oral supplements and medications offers the latest solution to an age old problem. Today’s treatments are capable of providing patients with a natural appearance that enhances their self-image and self-confidence.
